YouView ignites interest from hundreds of content providers

YouView, a new subscription-free internet-connected TV service for the UK, today confirmed that hundreds of organisations involved in content provision have registered their interest in engaging with YouView as the platform develops.

These represent a wide range of free and paid content including, entertainment, mainstream and independent films, music, news, factual, sport, arts and local content.

Following the launch of its industry engagement programme for content providers last year, YouView also announced today the names of the 29 organisations with which it is working closely to shape and test the processes for making content available via the platform.

YouView opens engagement with content providers

YouView today formally invited expressions of interest from content providers, looking to make their content available on the open internet-connected TV environment.

This marks the launch of an ongoing industry engagement programme, with YouView aiming to open up the nation’s TV screens to the widest possible range of content types for viewers.

The first phase of the programme will focus on identifying a small number of audio and video on demand content providers that can closely work with the YouView technical team to develop and test the processes for making content available via YouView.

YouView announce agency line-up

New partners to help ‘change the way you watch TV forever’

YouView, the internet connected digital TV platform, today announced its agency line-up in a further step towards launch next year.

YouView has appointed Adam & Eve as its advertising agency to create through-the-line advertising and communications. OMD has been appointed as YouView’s planning and buying agency and Momentum will act as YouView’s specialist retail and experiential marketing agency.

YouView welcomes Ofcom decision

In response to Ofcom’s decision today not to open an investigation under the Competition Act, YouView CEO Richard Halton said:

“We have been clear throughout this process that YouView will stimulate competition in the TV platform market and create opportunities for content providers and device manufacturers. Most importantly it represents a great consumer proposition. We therefore welcome this decision from Ofcom.

“In a market dominated by pay services, we are creating the only mass market IPTV service that will be subscription free. All our efforts are now focused on launching a brilliant consumer product for launch next year. We look forward to broadening our engagement with wider industry partners over the coming weeks and months.”

Jeremy Hunt signals YouView’s potential to enable new local TV services

In a speech to the Royal Television Society today, Jeremy Hunt MP, the Culture Secretary has stated that YouView can play an important part in developing local TV services in the UK.

Hunt was outlining further details of the Government’s plan to encourage the growth of hyper-local TV services in the UK, which forms a central plank of the Government’s decentralisation agenda. Hunt stated that he envisioned new local TV services that would “exploit the potential of new platform technologies such as YouView … to grow their service and improve their cost-effectiveness.”

Richard Halton announced as Chief Executive Officer

YouView is today revealed as the brand that will bring a new free-to-air internet-connected TV service to UK homes next year.

The seven partners behind Project Canvas have today announced the formation of YouView TV Ltd as well as the appointment of its new CEO, Richard Halton.[1]

From next year viewers will have the choice of a subscription-free YouView set top box that will combine their favourite digital TV channels with the last seven days’ catch up TV, as well as bringing a full range of on-demand services and interactive extras straight to the living room.
