YouView Core Technical Specification
At YouView, we’re committed to helping develop common technical standards for connected TV. Such standards bring significant advantages, allowing any manufacturer to maximise their investment by re-using their developments in complex technologies across multiple markets.
Common standards also mean content providers can more easily share their content widely across any connected TV device, and be part of a wider ecosystem.
But making this happen isn’t easy – it requires not only knowledge and ability but also a willingness and commitment to participate in such an activity.
YouView and our partners have invested heavily in researching and developing the enabling technology for connected TV. We’ve also been very active in industry standardisation, primarily as members of the Digital Television Group (DTG) in the development of the D-Book and connected TV standards. Harmonisation with other European standardisation activity has also been sought with HbbTV and the EBU through close liaison via the DTG and more directly where appropriate.
The aim is to maximise the common underlying technology that underpins a range of platforms, including YouView. By publishing the YouView Core Technical Specification we are giving industry visibility of the technologies within a YouView device, thereby promoting further the commonality across connected TV implementations.

The specification provides the industry with a set of technologies to enable the delivery of broadcast and IP enabled content to a television set via a broadband connected device.
We’ve made this specification available here to help device manufacturers bring products to market utilising the same underlying technologies as a YouView device – regardless of whether or not they choose to use our brand. The specification will also give those manufacturers interested in developing and deploying a device under the YouView brand a broad understanding of what will be required. This will help create a competitive market for connected TV devices in the UK and beyond which means more innovation, cheaper devices and more choice for consumers.
For more information on what the specification covers and how it will assist manufacturers please look at the introduction and overview to the document.
Whilst this document is primarily intended for manufacturers, there are useful elements covering content formats and content protection that will be of interest to Content Providers, and information on IP-delivery of content and device configuration that are relevant to ISPs.
We plan to update our industry zone with further useful information and resources for device manufacturers, content providers and developers. So watch out for updates or register your interest and we’ll ensure you receive news on developments directly from us.
